About Weight Loss

As individuals age, weight gain becomes more common and increasingly challenging to manage. The frustration of seeing the numbers on the scale rise despite unchanged habits can be disheartening. For those struggling with persistent pockets of fat and exhausting all other avenues, exploring weight loss medication combined with a sensible and sustainable eating plan, could potentially offer benefits.

The implications of weight gain on health are profound, encompassing risks such as heart disease, diabetes and musculoskeletal disorders. Overweight and obesity, characterised by excessive fat accumulation, pose significant health risks. Defined by a body mass index (BMI) over 25 for overweight and over 30 for obesity, this issue has reached epidemic levels, with over 4 million annual deaths attributable to overweight or obesity in 2017 according to the World Health Organization.

While the rewards of shedding weight often motivate individuals, the journey isn’t always straightforward. Many resort to unsustainable yo-yo diets or fads, leading to regained weight once the regimen ceases. Moreover, for some, conventional approaches of diet and exercise might not be feasible due to joint issues or demanding work schedules.

Understanding Healthy Weight Loss

Healthy weight loss involves altering one’s relationship with food, emphasising a balanced understanding of nutrition rather than extreme diets. Realistic expectations and gradual progress are pivotal in achieving and maintaining a healthy BMI.
Dr. Chris and Claire from Burnside Cosmetic, in collaboration with Dr Pennie Taylor, have joined forces to introduce a comprehensive, multidisciplinary weight loss program. This program aims to provide support and guidance throughout the journey to a healthier lifestyle.

About Weight Loss Medications

Weight loss medications are indicated as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management. Dr Chris may prescribe suitable weight loss medication after a thorough assessment.

If you are considering weight loss medications to help you lose weight, it is important that you speak to a doctor to find out further information about the benefits and risks, including any potential side effects.

Taking The First Step

An initial consultation with Dr Chris is required to be screened before committing to the Weight Loss Program.

This appointment involves taking a comprehensive medical history, reviewing current medications, and organising appropriate blood tests. If suitable, the New Leaf Program will be offered. There is an additional fee for this consultation which is not part of the New Leaf Program.

FAQs

How do I book my first appointment?

Simply phone the friendly team at Burnside Cosmetic on 7221 2577 to discuss booking an initial appointment with Dr Chris Koulos to discuss your eligibility.

Can I see my own GP at the same time?

Yes, you can still seek medical advice from your own GP before, during and after being on the New Leaf program.

Do I have to take the medication?

No, if you choose not to, Dr Chris & our dietitian can guide you through the program with the lower carbohydrate eating plan side of the program only.

What’s so good about these bioimpedance body composition analysis scales?

Bioimpedance scales will tell you accurately what your body weight is composed of i.e., how much of your body is fat mass, muscle mass and water. So, progress is measured mainly by looking at reducing the body fat mass percentage whilst either maintaining or increasing your muscle mass. Just looking at body weight changes sometimes does not tell you just how well you are progressing!

Why is this program better than just taking medication alone?

Support is crucial when trying to lose weight and the combination of visits with a doctor, dietitian and nurse will set you up for long-term success. Combining weight loss medications with a lower carbohydrate diet gives fantastic results and sustained, lifelong weight loss.
